I sing backups in bands sometimes, and I sing bass in church, but my music is ever only instrumental because in my compositional thinking I only think instrumental. I also find purely instrumental music to be more musically challenging since the ensemble IS the music rather than just a backdrop for a singer or a vocal. THat's also why I think it's a greater challenge to write instrumental music and bring the tonal and melodic combinations to a level of interaction where it does as much musically as a voice, maybe even more. But I look at Lennon/McCartney, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Pete, Prince, and several others as modern composers because they are filling the musical canvas with the full range of colors, tones that is, and paying special attention to the layering of instruments, and ultimately the vocal becomes a melodic instrument, rather than gaffing the whole track in a non-melodic way. We have a tendency not to look at pop songwriters as composers, and most of them do, in fact, just sing. I also meant to mention that this somehow enhances the emotional effectiveness of the song. Great info, and I think "Who are You"-title track video, demonstrates this as well,so musical, but gutsy.Agreed. The root notes, the one's that start is FF-CC-FF-CC (each letter is a note played). One part is the octace notes, then a little chromatic walkup, you just play them slow in relation to each other, then speed it up. I used to play them in slowly on a sequencer and speed them up, it sounded perfect, spot on. The result is a more expansive, inclusive vision of pop, music that keeps rewriting its history with every beat.AS far as the parts, it's two separate parts.
